Dr.Saman M. Kariyakarawana

Dr. Saman M. Kariyakarawana is a distinguished scholar and media professional with an extensive background in cultural studies, Sinhala literature, and performance arts. He recently obtained his PhD from Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka in 2024, focusing on the post-colonial indigenization campaign and the invention of new traditions in Sri Lanka. This advanced degree complements an already robust academic foundation, including an MPhil, MA, and a B.A. (Hons.). all primarily from the University of Ruhuna. Since October 2022, Dr. Kariyakarawana has served as a Head of the Media Unit for the Southern Provincial Ministry of Education and Information.

Parallel to his current role, Dr. Kariyakarawana possesses over two decades of intermittent academic experience. He began his career as a Temporary Assistant Lecturer at the University of Ruhuna and later served as a Research Assistant. Since 2015, he has built an extensive portfolio as a Visiting Lecturer at several prestigious institutions, including the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, the University of the Visual and Performing Arts, and the South Eastern University. Across these roles, he has taught a diverse array of subjects spanning Sinhala literature and grammar, communication theory, web communication, aesthetics, and literary criticism.

Dr. Kariyakarawana’s research interests are interdisciplinary, covering literary studies, folk drama, conflict resolution, media studies, and indigenous culture. He is a prolific author and researcher, having co-authored several books, including felicitation volumes and guides to Sinhala literature, and published numerous articles in prominent national and international journals. His scholarly work frequently employs critical theory—such as new Marxist and post-colonial readings—to analyze Sri Lankan cultural phenomena, ranging from Kolam mask drama to contemporary political economy. Beyond academia, he has served on the Literary Panel of the Sri Lanka Arts Council and as a judge for the Godage National Literary Awards.
